GDC 2008: 18 Million Xbox 360 Units Sold Worldwide

The console war is definitely heating up, but Microsoft is still taking advantage of their one-year head-start, as clearly indicated by the recent sales numbers. During Microsoft's GDC 2008 keynote, John Schappert revealed Microsoft had sold over 18 million 360 units worldwide.
"I think that we've sold 18 million, the last time I've checked. 18 million hardware units worldwide," he told Eurogamer.
Of course, the biggest news of the past few weeks has been the demise of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray's victory, which means the PS3 suddenly has a leg up on the Xbox 360. However, while it was rumored that Microsoft might release a Blu-Ray add-on for the 360 - now that HD-DVD has been canceled - Schappert said they have no plans to do that right now.
"We have no plans to announce anything like that right now. But I'd also urge you to look at the attach rate for the HD-DVD drive," he said. When prompted, he elaborated- "It was a 3 percent attach rate...you also have to take into account how did the other accessory do when you look at the future."
Most analysts believe HD-DVD's loss won't negatively impact sales for the Xbox 360. That 18 million sold already have definitely helped to establish a solid user base for their system, anyway, right?
